Synopsis

DINOLANDIA | documentary by Pablo Chehebar y Nicolas Iacouzzi.

A mechanic becomes the savior of Villa El Chocón, a small Patagonian town on the brink of extinction. But when he uncovers the colossal fossil of a new carnivorous dinosaur, he sparks an unexpected war between scientists, mayors, and neighboring towns—all fighting to claim the title of discovering the “world’s largest dinosaur.” In this battle for survival, anything goes: replica trafficking, bone theft, chains of protest, and the messianic dreams of a mayor determined to turn his town into DINOLANDIA.

Filmed in the cities of El Chocón, Neuquén, Plaza Huincul, and Cutral-Co, this documentary captures the transformation of these Patagonian towns following the discovery of the colossal dinosaurs that once roamed the region

In the words of the directors

Intrigue, controversy, and dinosaurs—what more could you ask for in a story?

DINOLANDIA is not just a documentary about colossal fossils—it’s a human story as epic as it is unexpected. At the heart of this tale is Rubén Carolini, a mechanic turned hero, whose life changed forever when he discovered the remains of what would be considered the largest carnivorous dinosaur in the world: Giganotosaurus carolinii. But his discovery unearthed more than just bones; it ignited unchecked ambition, power struggles, and a fierce battle for control over a paleontological treasure.

As we delved into this story, we encountered a fascinating protagonist—controversial, passionate, witty, and above all, determined to protect his legacy and that of his town. Because beyond the science and the headlines, the real battle wasn’t just over the dinosaur, but over the future of Villa El Chocón. While scientists and paleontologists fought to study and preserve the find in an academic setting, others saw Giganotosaurus as an opportunity to turn the town into a monumental tourist attraction. How does a small Patagonian town become the birthplace of a prehistoric giant? And how far is one willing to go to keep that dream alive?

Rubén Carolini didn’t just discover a dinosaur—he ended up literally chained to his own creature. “Carola,” as he fondly called her, became the symbol of a struggle that blends science, politics, tourism, and survival. A story where anything goes: bone theft, replica trafficking, political maneuvers, chains of protest, and a mayor with grand ambitions of transforming his town into a land of living dinosaurs.

With Dinolandia, we invite viewers on a one-of-a-kind journey, where reality surpasses fiction. A documentary that explores the clash between ambition and identity, between natural history and human interests. Because, at its core, this is not just a story about dinosaurs—it’s about the people who try to leave their own mark on history through them.
