DINOLANDIA | documental dirigido por Pablo Chehebar y Nicolas Iacouzzi.
A mechanic becomes the savior of Villa El Chocón, a small Patagonian town on the brink of extinction. But when he discovers the colossal fossil of a new carnivorous dinosaur, he unleashes an unlikely war between scientists, mayors, and neighboring towns—all fighting to claim the “world’s largest dinosaur.” In this survival of the fittest, anything goes: replica trafficking, bone theft, chained protests, and messianic dreams of turning a forgotten village into DINOLANDIA.
Filmed in the cities of El Chocón, Neuquén, Plaza Huincul, and Cutral-Co, the documentary captures the transformation of these Patagonian towns following the discovery of colossal dinosaurs that once roamed the region. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage and exclusive interviews, it also offers a fresh and surprising perspective on a man who became a national hero: Rubén Darío Carolini.

Director's Statement
Scandals, secrets, and dinosaurs—what else do you need?
Dinolandia is not just a documentary about colossal fossils—it’s a human story as epic as it is unexpected. At the center of it all is Rubén Carolini, a mechanic turned hero, whose life changed forever when he discovered the remains of what would be considered the largest carnivorous dinosaur in the world: Giganotosaurus Carolinii. But his discovery unearthed more than just bones—it unleashed wild ambitions, power struggles, and a fierce battle over the control of a paleontological treasure.
As we delved into this story, we found a fascinating protagonist: controversial, passionate, witty, and above all, determined to protect both his legacy and that of his town. Because beyond the science and the headlines, the real fight wasn’t just over the dinosaur—it was about the future of Villa El Chocón. While scientists and paleontologists pushed to study and preserve the fossil in more academic and distant settings, others saw in the Giganotosaurus an opportunity to transform the town into a monumental tourist destination.
How does a small Patagonian town become the cradle of a prehistoric giant? And how far is one willing to go to keep that dream alive?
Rubén Carolini didn’t just discover a dinosaur—he ended up chained (literally) to his own creature. “Carola,” as he affectionately called it, became the symbol of a struggle blending science, politics, tourism, and survival. A story where anything goes: bone theft, replica trafficking, political maneuvering, chained protests, and a mayor with grandiose dreams of turning his town into a land of living dinosaurs.
With Dinolandia, we take the viewer on a one-of-a-kind journey where reality outshines fiction. A documentary that explores the clash between ambition and identity, between natural history and human interests. Because in the end, this isn’t just a story about dinosaurs—it’s about the people trying to leave their own mark in history through them.
